Optional Subjects

Design and Technology: Textiles GCSE

Course content

Opportunities to design and make new products and learn through practical experimentation are central to students enjoying and becoming successful in this course.

Core course theory covers materials and techniques from the world of design and technology as a whole. There is also specialised knowledge learnt in the history, current uses and new technologies of specialist textile materials and techniques.

Where Year 9 has prepared students to develop a broad range of practical skills and technical knowledge, Year 10 will encourage students to apply these skills more independently in their own design challenges. Understanding the role of the designer in improving the world around us is an important element of this course.

The context for a Non-Examined Assessment will be set by the exam board during the Summer Term of Year 10 and the completion of this will be the focus of the early part of Year 11. Students are asked to create their own brief within these contexts and will be challenged to design and make a new product that will typically answer issues that are relevant to our modern world. Students will be able to guide their work to areas that interest them and could create products with interior design or fashion uses.

The work of all students will be celebrated in Years 10 and 11 as part of our Technology Showcase.

Assessment

The final grade is assessed as follows:

  • Non-Examined Assessment with a Textiles specialism - 50%
  • Written examination - 50% - core content to reflect all DT materials plus specialised Textiles knowledge
