The Regis School PE - Athlete Profile

Adelicia first started sailing properly at the age of 10. She had always been a very good swimmer and naturally liked the water having had lots of holidays abroad, jumping off boats into the sea. She always had a real sense of determination and resilience and joined Arun Yacht Club before realising a true passion for sailing then moved to Felpham Sailing Club! On day one they realised Adelicia had something special, frequently winning trophies, and so they suggested she applied to a National Squad.

Within a year at National level, she became First Girl in her class and in the top few overall in her class. This meant a lot of travelling all over the country, but the sailing was the beginning of a journey into her future in every way. At one stage she was considering aiming for the Olympics, but having met a few Olympians has decided on more of a long term goal, and that is to be a Sports Psychologist - for Olympians. She is frequently asked to coach sailing, and recently coached at a National Open event for 50 sailors. She is also going to be regularly coaching, (unpaid) at Emsworth throughout the winter.

With GCSEs coming up, she is focusing her time more locally, stepping back from the pressures of National squads but using her skills and expertise to help others, and has in the meantime also taken up windsurfing; and with her understanding of sailing it has helped her learn very quickly. She has also realised that it is okay to start at the bottom again (with windsurfing) having been a number one sailor, but that she will achieve the standard she desires by keeping trying and practising. She will coach more and more through the winter, on Saturdays and then windsurf on Sundays. She goes to the gym each week to keep the right muscle groups working and sets her own targets.

Adelicia has shown that determination gets you a long way in life. Sport for her is her way of relaxing but it also has helped her massively in her whole personality with mindset, determination, resilience, confidence and team work.
