Optional Subjects

Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE

Course content

During the course, students will be provided with opportunities to design, make and investigate a variety of dishes and in doing so develop the necessary skills and understanding to become competent with several cooking methods. These include pastry making, cakes and sauces.

A Non-Examined Assessment task (project) is provided by the examination board. Themes vary from multicultural celebration foods to dishes for dietary needs.

Students will also learn about elements of the food industry, from sensory testing to health and hygiene.

Homework will form an essential part of the course. Students are expected to be organised and provide ingredients for regular practical lessons. The provision of ingredients by students is essential to successfully complete the NEA elements of the course. ICT is used throughout the Non-Examined Assessment task to enable students to complete work to a professional standard.
