Year 11 Geography Field Trip

Coastal Fieldwork

On Thursday 12 and Friday 13 of September the Geography Department took over 100 Year 11 students to visit Felpham beach to conduct their coastal fieldwork as a compulsory element for their summer exam.  Students went on this trip to investigate the impact of coastal management on processes and communities.

Students left school just after break time and made the walk down to the seafront, whilst on this walk our students did the school proud and demonstrated not only an awareness for the public but also of basic road safety.  Students were able to make great time and were very obliging when it came to the slightly long walk to Felpham beach.

On both days students and staff were very lucky with the weather.  The Thursday gave some respite from the warm weather, but students embraced the ‘windswept and interesting look’.  By comparison those students on the Friday were looking longingly at the calm coastal waters for a quick paddle as the sunshine came out in droves for the day.

Whilst on this trip the Year 11 students were asked to collect several pieces of data that would be necessary to review both in their lessons and apply in their summer examinations.  They collected data on the profile of the beach to show a build up of sediment.  They also measured the groyne drop height from the west and east sides of the groyne demonstrating the direction of sediment flow and ultimately how effective the coastal management at Felpham had been.

Our Year 11 students will now be applying the information they collected on the trip in their next series of geography lessons.
