Regis School Students Through to National Big Bang Final!

A group of  50 students in Years 7 and 8 were invited to attend the Big Bang Fair at the South of England showground in Ardingly last week after getting through to the Schools Science Fair final in April.

The winners and runners up from TRS Science Fair were invited to present their projects at the Regional Heats which were happening that day. The students who entered their projects into the Regional Competition were Samuel Russell, Isaac Boniface and Robert Fletcher from Year 7 and Aston Hossack, Elliot Harris and Sophie Riley from Year 8.

These six students did phenomenally well and had to present their work and discuss their findings with three different sets of judges, all of whom were experts in their field.  Four out of the six students who entered their projects won Awards at the Regional Competition.

Isaac Boniface (Year 7) won the Crawley Borough Council Prize for Creativity for his project on stealthy materials and which object is most invisible to radars.

Sophie Riley (Year 8) was the runner up for the Junior Science Category with her project on the difference between hard and soft water.

Robert Fletcher (Year 7) won the Junior Science Category with his microbiology project on the importance of washing hands.

Aston Hossack (Year 8) won the Junior Engineering category with his project on whether his hamster could power a lightbulb.

Aston and Robert have been invited to Birmingham next March as winners in the Regional Heat, to compete in the National finals!

The rest of the students who went on the trip got the chance to explore the Fair throughout the day and take part in different activities such as holding boa constrictor snakes and seeing the work which police dogs do through sniffer dogs. A fantastic day was had by all and I’m already looking forward to going again next year!
