October 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

In the school’s attempt to raise standards of Literacy throughout the school, Years 7-10 will, after the half term break, be set weekly spelling homework in addition to other homework being set. The students will receive, in tutor time, spelling lists which students will be required to learn. We will then quiz students weekly. The spelling lists aim to increase students’ vocabulary as well as develop their accuracy in writing. We will be sending a communication home each week to your email address, which contains your child’s given spellings, and would encourage you to quiz your children each night in order to help them to score as highly as possible. The strategy we have been teaching the children is: Look, Cover, Write and Check (as per the Knowledge Organisers) and the students will be provided with a card on which to complete this task.

Your child should study these words daily and will be quizzed on them in tutor time the following week. Our aim is to encourage students to see the value of learning new vocabulary in order to assist them across the school with the accuracy of their writing. We will collect the students’ results weekly, in order to identify any gaps in their understanding, and re-test any students have struggled to secure. As you will see, we have included some ‘challenge words’ each week, which we hope, will develop their ability to express themselves in their written work. Please encourage your child to use these words in conversations at home as well as in their work.

We will not be issuing detentions for low scores as we want students to see this as a valuable experience as opposed to a punitive measure. As a school, we would appreciate your support in encouraging students to invest time in learning new words and learning spellings each week. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly. My details are at the bottom of this letter.

Yours faithfully
